How did you find Communication Studies?
I came across Communication Studies because I wanted a major that was both interesting and applicable to daily life. I have always been interested in the ways in which people communicate with one another. There is so much more to communication than meets the eye, and I was excited to discover this in depth.
What do you like about being a Communication Studies Major?
To me, the best thing about Comm Studies is that I can apply what I learn to my daily life. I have taken a lot of interpersonal classes that have taught me about communicating with people from different cultures, how to handle conflict, the stages of a relationship, etc. Because of this knowledge, I am able to have more agency in my life in order to better my relationships and the relationships of others.
What is your favorite class?
My favorite class so far has been conflict and negotiation with Dr. Castle. This class was incredible because we learned all about how conflicts come about, how to navigate them in order to get the best result for everyone involved, and how to recognize conflicts that need to be addressed in our own lives. Because of this class, I was able to help several family members and friends with arguments in their lives, and I was also able to better my relationships with my sisters (especially my younger sister, who is notorious for starting conflict!).

Explain some of the cool experiences you have had at UNL.
Going to school here at UNL has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Throughout undergrad, I have had the opportunity to be involved in intramural sports, I have done research in the field of Communication Studies, I have worked for the Huskers and Big Ten Network in media relations, and I spent two years as a resident assistant in Neihardt. All of these experiences have shaped me into the person I am today, and I am incredibly grateful for that. Perhaps the best experience, however, has been discovering my career path. Because of my connections at UNL and my knowledge of communication, I have been able to work full-time while finishing up my degree. Currently, I am an executive for Mary Kay Cosmetics, and my job is to train consultants and speak around Nebraska and the U.S. Looking forward, I am excited to be taking this career and speaking not just in the States, but abroad as well. Within a year and a half, I will be at the National level with Mary Kay, and I think that my growth in business can be attributed greatly to my education in Communication Studies.
