New initiative to connect students to internships, improve tracking

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is implementing a new university internship initiative to enhance career-building opportunities for students. Starting in the spring of 2018, Career Service’s Mallory Wallace will lead a pilot version of the initiative with the College of Arts & Sciences. Mallory will be working with advisors from the college to set up workflows via an online app called Handshake. Handshake lets students connect their internships to a class, allowing for them to manage their learning outcomes along with their educators and employers. The app sends surveys to users, enabling the university to collect data about internship experiences. With this data, the university can determine how many students are employed in internships, and understand how internships affect future career paths.

The initiative is expected to be expanded to all colleges in fall 2018, managed through the University Internship Committee. Handshake is expected to eventually replace Husker Hire Link.
