Rana Young, a graduating Master of Fine Arts student in the School of Art, Art History & Design, is this year's recipient of the Office of Graduate Studies' Outstanding Graduate Research and Creative Activities Award.

An Othmer Fellowship recipient, Young serves as an installation photographer for the Sheldon Museum of Art. She received her B.F.A. in studio art from Portland State University.

Recently, she was included in Detroit Center for Photography’s NEW DIRECTIONS Gallery and was awarded second place in the 2016 Lenscratch Student Prize. She was also the recipient of a Society for Photographic Education 2016 Innovations in Imaging Award.

Earlier this month, her MFA Thesis Exhibition, titled “The Rug’s Topography,” was on display in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall.

Professor of Photography Dana Fritz said, “As an Othmer Fellow, Rana showed great promise upon her arrival and has exceeded our expectations for a recipient of this generous fellowship. Rana’s photographs are as beautiful and moving as they are timely. The concepts in her work draw from personal experience, but connect with a wider audience as our society finally begins to have a long-awaited and nuanced public discussion about gender norms and expectations."
