Art, Music, Lectures this First Friday at UNL

Kick-off the new school year by visiting museums right here on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus tonight for First Friday. The Great Plains Art Museum, International Quilt Study Center & Museum and Sheldon Museum of Art will offer free and extended hours tonight in addition to gallery openings, lectures, music and more.


Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q St., City Campus
5-7 p.m.

Great Plains speaker Melissa Dabakis: “Ecoventions: Art on the Farm” Melissa Dabakis is an American and Modern European Art History professor at Kenyon College. She will speak on contemporary environmental art and site-specific sculpture during the Great Plains Art Museum's First Friday event.

International Quilt Study Center & Museum, 1523 N. 33rd St., East Campus
4:30-7 p.m.

First Friday at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum will feature the grand opening of "Signature Cloths," an exhibition that explores sewn signatures as visual ciphers and as a method of social engagement, guest curated by Lynn Setterington. Quilt artist Luke Haynes will also present a lecture on "arc-quilt-tecture" at 5:30 p.m.

Sheldon Museum of Art, 12th and R streets, City Campus
5–7 p.m.

Sheldon Museum of Art invites the campus community and general public to a Big Red–themed First Friday reception featuring music by the Cornhusker Marching Band's pep band, tailgate food, and a Big Red gallery game from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on September 5. Admission is free.
