"Getting to Know You" will be the inaugural exhibition displayed in Quilt House's expanded galleries.

The International Quilt Study Center & Museum at Quilt House will open its newly expanded galleries on June 5. The museum will offer free admission from 3-8 p.m. in conjunction with First Friday.

Friday also marks the opening of two new exhibitions:
• “Ambiguity & Enigma: Recent Quilts by Michael James”
• “Getting to Know You”

The festivities will feature two special presentations:
• Modern quiltmaker and author Sherri Lynn Wood will give a multimedia presentation of “Improvise! Creating, Quilting, & Living Courageously” at 3:30 p.m.
• Leah Sorensen-Hayes, quilt artist, will present “Quilting the Contours” at 5:30 p.m. Sorensen-Hayes will discuss the quilt projects with which she has been involved over the past 15 years as Michael James’s studio assistant.

Light refreshments will be served during First Friday.

The 13,200-square-foot expansion was made possible by a $7 million gift from the Robert and Ardis James Foundation. Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York with Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture of Omaha designed the building and the expansion. Sampson Construction oversaw the construction. In addition to gallery space, the expansion includes a new digital gallery and storage for the museum’s growing collection.
