Toni Morehouse, a lecturer in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders, retired Aug. 31 after nearly 30 years at the university.

A licensed, certified speech-language pathologist, Morehouse was a past president of the Nebraska Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and had served in various roles on the board of directors for the Nebraska Stroke Foundation, Stars and Stripes Sertoma Club, University Sertoma Club, Sertoma State Speech and Hearing Association, and the Nebraska Board of Examiners in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Morehouse answered a few questions about her time at UNL prior to her retirement.

What made you want to work in speech-language pathology in the university setting?
After working in three different states over a period of 13 years, I had accumulated experience in public schools, Head Start and private practice. I was interested in expanding my career and believed I had something to offer university students who were interested in becoming speech-language pathologists.

What made UNL's Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders the right fit for you?
I was a graduate of the UNL program. I knew the program was growing and gaining national recognition, and it felt like "coming home."

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your time at UNL?
At UNL, I have had the opportunity to work with respected and brilliant colleagues, bright and inquisitive students, precious and deserving clients, and their wonderful families. I have been blessed.

What will you remember most about working in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders?
The challenging environment that made me think every day. It has been an unforgettable learning experience. I hope others learned as much from me as I did from them.

What are your plans for your first day of retirement?
I hope to volunteer at one of my five granddaughters' schools, and thereafter on a rotating basis!
