First SECD brown bag session of fall semester set for Sept. 23

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders announced five fall semester dates for brown bag sessions at the Barkley Memorial Center. The brown bags are intended primarily to allow graduate students to present and respond to research topics, while receiving feedback from the people in attendance.

This fall’s presentations, which are open to anyone to attend, include research topics by four students, three pursuing doctoral degrees and one pursuing a master’s. Department chair Sherri Jones will be the fifth featured speaker, presenting tips for interviewing and negotiating a job offer.

The brown bag sessions for the fall semester are listed below. All presentations are held from 1-2 p.m. in room 131 of the Barkley Memorial Center, except for the Nov. 4 session, which will be in room 130.

Sept. 23: Seth Roy – “The Effect of Frequency Resolution on Intelligibility Sentence and its Relevance to Cochlear Implant Design,” plus sharing about having a cochlear implant and experiences with speech-language pathologists and audiologists

Oct. 7: Alaina Bassett – fMRI study with motor imagery and action observations of balance function

Oct. 21: Bahar Shahsavarani – “The Interaction of Temporal and Spectral Information with Word Predictability in Speech Perception”

Nov. 4: Anne Thomas – “Assessing Parent-Examiner Agreement of a Parent Report Measure of Infant Vocal Behaviors” *Room 130*

Dec. 9: Sherri Jones – “Interviewing Skills and Negotiating a Job Offer”

Anyone interested in presenting at a brown bag session, including doctoral students from other departments, is encouraged to attend the first session Sept. 23. Individuals may also contact Cynthia Cress, the Alan T. Seagren Associate Professor of Education, at ccress1@unl.edu to learn more about the brown bag sessions. Interested presenters are also encouraged to attend an organizational meeting held the first Friday of the semester, where the brown bag sessions schedule is usually set for the upcoming semester.
