For the third year in a row, undergraduate students in special education and speech-language pathology have the opportunity to spend two weeks in Costa Rica as part of a Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders study abroad trip.
This year’s trip will take place May 14-28, 2017. During their time in Costa Rica, the students will work through the Monteverde Institute to spend time working in both public and private schools in Monteverde, a mountain town about 100 miles northwest of San José. The group of students will be led by associate professor of practice Sue Kemp and professor John Maag, who had eight students travel with them last year.
The Nebraska students help students in Monteverde’s public schools practice their English. In the private schools, where English speaking is the norm, they assist with giving assessments for English acquisition, as well as instructing the teachers how to administer those assessments in an effort to monitor the students’ progress.
In addition to their work with the schools, the students from Nebraska live with host families during their time in Monteverde. They also spend time learning about sustainability and ecotourism at the Monteverde Institute.
All students are encouraged to apply for the Costa Rica study abroad trip, with preference given to special education and speech-language pathology majors, then other education majors.
