Faculty and staff can sign up to lead small group conversations during the fall Husker Dialogues event. Training sessions begin March 21.

Husker Dialogues is an event for incoming students that uses small group discussions to lay the foundation for practicing and engaging in conversations about diversity and inclusion. Over 2,600 incoming students participated in the 2016 event; and 87 percent of students agreed afterward that they were more aware of diversity in the campus community.

Training sessions will be March 21 through April 4 for volunteers signing up as conversation guides for the fall 2017 event. The trainings will help volunteers understand what to expect from the event, feel prepared and practice skills for hosting meaningful conversations about diversity and inclusion. The 90-minute training is required this year based on constructive feedback from past facilitators.

“Last year’s response by faculty and staff was overwhelmingly positive,” said Amy Goodburn, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and interim dean of enrollment management. “Their participation showed how much they cared about being role models for supporting meaningful dialogues with students.”

For 2017, the planning committee hopes to have 370 conversation guides. Individuals can sign up here: http://go.unl.edu/huskerdialogues
