Sonia Manca, a postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of Janos Zempleni, Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, won First Prize in the Emerging Leaders competition for her work titled “The bioavailability and distribution of bovine milk exosomes are distinct from that of their cargos in mice.” This national recognition was bestowed by the American Society for Nutrition at the Experimental Biology 2017 meeting in Chicago, Illinois. Exomes and their various cargos are novel families of bioactive food compounds that regulate gene expression and metabolism. Exosomes and their cargos are also considered candidates for early detection of disease and as vehicles for the delivery of drugs that are unstable or poorly absorbed.
