Deconstruct Social Justice at the UNL Empowerment Forum
Featuring keynote speaker Dr. becky martinez from the Social Justice Institute

Lincoln, NE November 7th 2013- The Vice Chancellors office of Student Affairs, UPC, The Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, Sociology and the College of Arts and Science bring to campus the UNL Empowerment Forum Fall 2013! A free event on November 14th from 7pm- 8:30pm and the 15th at 12:30pm - 4:30pm open to all currently registered UNL students, faculty, and staff. Our theme for this year’s event is redefining and deconstructing 'Social Justice’. With increased dialogue on campus about how our students face diversity issues and social justice on campus we are hosting a guest lecturer to help encourage healthy debate, discussion, and understanding of what it means to be a socially accepting campus. We will feature guest speaker, Dr. becky martinez and interactive discussion to help students, faculty, and staff understand how we can embrace diversity at UNL. Free food and refreshments will be provided.

The purpose of the Empowerment Forum is to help attendees gain a better understanding of diversity and social justice, gain a better understanding of what it means to be a member of an inclusive society, and to have these attendees leave the Empowerment Forum empowered with an understanding of their personal growth and their effect on the community.

This fall semester, the Empowerment Forum has invited Dr. becky martinez as our keynote speaker. Dr. martinez is a consultant and trainer with an emphasis on social justice, leadership, and organizational change. She is coming to UNL to speak about how to engage social justice in our student life at UNL and our daily lives outside of our classes. If you are interested in finding your voice and joining the conversation attend one or both of this years sessions.

Dr. martinez will be hosting two sessions:
1st session: Thurs, Nov. 14, from 7-8:30, Nebraska Union Centennial Room
Follow up session: Fri, Nov. 15, from 12:30-4:30 Kauffman Center Great Hall.
The event is free for all and we encourage everyone to come and go, as they need. Thursday Dr. martinez will focus on understanding our campus and our diversity with follow-up and interactive small group discussion on Friday. Snacks and prizes will be given out. Registration can be completed online at stuafs.unl.edu/empower.
