Civil Rights Act: 50th Anniversary

The Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education is pleased to invite you to participate in a unique event on Thursday, July 3, 2014 in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law. This historic piece of legislation ushered in a whole new era in which the Federal Government was to institute and enforce protections against discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in ways never before done in history.

We are specifically looking for both undergraduate and graduate students falling into one or more of the following categories:

·Up-and-Coming Student Civil Rights Activists and Leaders
·Students Interested in Winning a National Poster Contest Whose Artwork will Become an Official Part the Event
·Student film makers and documentarians interested in chronicling the event and producing a documentary for Future Viewing

Those with a demonstrated commitment to civil rights may be especially interested in taking part in a day-long event that is to bring together civil rights luminaries with young up-and-coming leaders for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Students will interact with senior Obama Administration officials and more than half a dozen of the original Freedom Riders who paved the way for so many of the civil rights this country knows today. These luminaries include Dion Diamond, Reginald Green, Dorie Ladner, John Moody, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, Charles Person, and Hank Thomas.

The hope is to help build the legacy while paying appropriate tribute to those who have given so much, sometimes at the risk of their very own lives, July 3, 2014 promises to be a day that event participants will not soon forget.

The application deadline for each of the three participation opportunities is Friday, May 30, 2014. Contact regarding the status of a decision will be received no later than two weeks prior to the event date.

If you are interested in applying, please contact lmoderow@unl.edu for the specific details in your area of interest.
