Observe the solar eclipse on Monday, August 21.

The first day of the Fall 2017 semester is also the same day as the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse.

Classes will not be cancelled on this day, but some instructors may choose to interrupt their classes to allow students to observe the eclipse. Be sure to check if your instructors have made adjustments to their class plans for that day.

Students should also be sure to avoid eye damage by picking up a pair of viewing glasses at one of several designated distribution locations on campus.

The total eclipse will occur at approximately 1:02 p.m. on Monday, but there will be several special events happening on and near campus throughout the day. This includes the university-hosted Eclipse STEM Expo from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 21 in Haymarket Park. The event is free to the public, and will feature interactive booths, demonstrations, and activities by STEM departments and organizations.

Get more information about the eclipse, events, and where you can get viewing glasses on the university website.
