New online graduate certficate program available in horticulture

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has begun a new online graduate certificate program in horticulture that's aimed at professionals already working in the field.

"The program also will appeal to anyone interested in exploring potential new careers in the field of horticulture," said Ellen Paparozzi, professor of horticulture and head of the new program.

Applications now are being accepted for the Spring 2013 semester for three graduate certificates available under the program. Certificate options are: Floriculture and Nursery Production Management; Ornamentals, Landscape and Turf; and Advanced Horticulture. Each certificate requires a minimum of 12 credit hours, and each can be completed entirely online.

Because these are graduate-level certificates, students accepted into the program may potentially apply credit hours earned under a certificate to the requirements of a master's degree program at UNL or at other institutions.

The program is made possible by a consortium of universities participating in the AG*IDEA Horticulture Initiative. Courses are taught by faculty from UNL, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Kansas State University, Texas Tech University and North Carolina State University.

"We are very excited to offer place-bound students the opportunity to further their education in horticulture, which is a very diverse field," Paparozzi said. "That diversity is reflected in the three certificates. The AG*IDEA partnership allows the participating universities to leverage their combined expertise for maximum mutual benefit."
