Nebraska 4-H'ers will participate in the Quilt of Valor Challenge, creating quilts to be donated to soldiers or veterans of military service who have been touched by war.

The National Quilts of Valor Foundation is challenging several fabric companies to "adopt" 11 Nebraska counties each, donating four yards of fabric to each county to be sewn into a QOV quilt top. So far, seven have agreed, donating enough fabric for 77 counties.

Phyllis Schoenholz, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension educator, said Nebraska is the first state to mount a statewide youth effort for the Quilts of Valor. The effort will continue the next two years, with quilts to be presented to the national foundation at the 2011 and 2012 Nebraska State Fairs.

Nebraska is so far the only state to participate in the program statewide.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation's mission is to provide all service members and veterans affected by war with "wartime quilts."
