Description:
As part of Minnesota Public Radio’s and American Public Media’s development team tasked with raising over $30 million annually and preparing for a major campaign, the Development Communications Manager works with the Senior Vice President of Development and Underwriting, the Development Directors and the Development Strategy and Special Projects Manager to implement both an internal and external development communications strategy to build the MPR/APM development brand within the organization and in the greater philanthropic community.

The Development Communications Manager’s role is to blend both fundraising and corporate communications best practices and lead the creation and implementation of effective, strategic communications, working both vertically and horizontally across the development department and the larger organization.

Position Responsibility:

• Lead internal and external Development communications efforts.
• Create and implement a comprehensive Development communications plan.
• Target specific audiences with key messages using a variety of mediums.
• Create communications to donors.
• Assist in creating development stewardship and acknowledgement materials.
• Coordinate with the existing social media team to expand and grow development’s social media communications.
• Manage the creation of an annual report.
• Manage a development speaker’s bureau for conferences and speaking engagements.
• Assist media relations staff with writing and editing development media alerts, news releases, feature releases and other publicity materials concerning major grants, Board members, etc.
• Assist media relations staff in developing Development media kits, conceptualize, assemble and distribute them; develop online media kits.
• Other duties as assigned


Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, business communication or related field.
• Three or more years of experience in comprehensive, development related communications

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated success with creating and implementing communications plans that address multiple audiences, key messages and media.
• Demonstrated comprehension of development and development communications best practices.
• Demonstrated success integrating social media into communications strategies.
• Demonstrated experience writing for the web.
• Demonstrated ability to lead communications planning and coordination.
• Demonstrated internal communications experience.
• Demonstrated experience working with design and other vendors.
• Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects concurrently.
• Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and work under pressure.
• Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically.
• Demonstrated success in working effectively with staff at all levels of the organization.
• Ability to easily adapt to change.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to lead without authority.
• Working knowledge of AP style.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Experience with major campaigns and campaign communications
• Knowledge of public radio programming and non-profit organizations
• Experience with graphic design, HTML and PowerPoint.
