The research enterprise at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln (UNL) has achieved great success during the past decade. UNL has expanded the breadth and depth of its research, scholarship, and creative activity; strengthened its strategic partnerships;
and enhanced technology development efforts to commercialize research discoveries to benefit society and fuel Nebraska’s economy. Research funding, one important measure of research success, has grown 180 percent since 2000. During fiscal year 2010, UNL’s external funding for research increased nearly 14 percent to more than $139 million. To help sustain that momentum, UNL’s Office of Research and Economic Development is seeking a qualified individual to assist with the development of competitive external grant proposals.
Position Description
The Proposal Development Specialist will help UNL faculty, administrators, and staff develop competitive external grant proposals, including those submitted to the Department of Defense, National Institutes
of Health, National Science Foundation, and U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Proposal Development Specialist will work closely with grant applicants at all stages of the proposal development process, from funding opportunity identification to ensuring
a proposal narrative meets program requirements to final submission. Specific responsibilities include improving the content, clarity, organization, and visual appeal of written documents; writing non-scientific proposal sections; and editing completed proposals.
In addition, the Proposal Development Specialist will support collaboration among colleagues within the Office of Proposal Development and faculty leaders during the development of multi-million dollar, interdisciplinary, and multi-institutional proposals, including participating in meetings of proposal writing and development teams, developing proposal writing timelines and ensuring deadlines are met, and collaborating with Office of Sponsored Programs personnel to help ensure compliance with sponsor requirements and to expedite proposal submission.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, or Journalism is required. Excellent communication, writing and editing, and project management skills are necessary. Candidates must have exceptional organizational skills and the ability to quickly become familiar with subject matter in a wide variety of scientific and scholarly disciplines. The ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment is essential. Travel is required.
