Dean Maria B. Marron announced the appointment of Frauke Hachtmann, Ph.D., and Mary Kay Quinlan, Ph.D., as associate deans of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications, effective Aug. 17, 2015.

“Drs. Hachtmann and Quinlan emerged from among the impressive pool of candidates in the national search for an associate dean,” Dean Maria B. Marron said. “They both have a strong record of service to the college and bring different strengths to the role of associate dean. I look forward to working with them in their new roles.”

The associate deans’ portfolio includes oversight of assessment, Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications accreditation, personnel and curricular, administrative and other functions. Additionally, the dual associate dean appointments represent a restructuring of the college’s administrative lines. The new positions will encompass the responsibilities of the former sequence heads for advertising/public relations and journalism/broadcasting.

Hachtmann served as interim associate dean in summer 2015, professor of advertising and public relations and sequence head since 2012. She joined the faculty in 2002 and in 2013-14 served as departmental executive officer for the UNL Committee of Institutional Collaboration, a consortium of the Big Ten member universities plus the University of Chicago, directed the graduate program from 2008-12 and mentored faculty in the CoJMC. In 2012, she was 1 of 18 scholars selected for the Advertising Educational Foundation visiting professor program.

Prior to teaching, Hachtmann worked for the Nebraska Athletic Department as a media buyer, editor of the Red N White Newsletter and in-house graphic designer. Hachtmann is a native of Germany. She came to UNL as a full-scholarship student-athlete on the women’s tennis team. She holds an undergraduate degree in advertising, a master’s degree in journalism, a master’s degree in business administration with an emphasis on international business and a Ph.D. in educational studies from UNL.

"I look forward to working with the dean to maintain and build upon the tradition of excellence in our college,” Hachtmann said.

Quinlan, UNL associate professor of journalism since 1999, chaired the curriculum committee for the past two years, the promotion and tenure committee the 2014-15 academic year, served as president of the National Press Club in 1986 and currently serves as executive director of the Nebraska High School Press Association and editor of the Oral History Association newsletter. Before joining the UNL CoJMC faculty, she taught graduate and undergraduate classes at the University of Maryland College of Journalism, where she was a Baltimore Sun Distinguished Lecturer and William Randolph Hearst Visiting Professional.

Before joining academe in 1992, she was a reporter in the two-person Washington, D.C., bureau for the Omaha World-Herald for 10 years and regional correspondent for Gannett News Service in Washington. She is a 1972 graduate of the UNL journalism college and has a master’s degree in journalism and a Ph.D. in American studies from the University of Maryland.

“As a UNL CoJMC graduate, I've always been grateful for the knowledge and skills I learned here that made it possible for me to have a challenging career as a reporter,” Quinlan said. “It has been a privilege to serve as a faculty member teaching new generations of young journalists. I'm looking forward to taking on this challenge to continue giving back to the college in a new way.”
