University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications students traveled to Chicago and New York City this fall to tour advertising and public relations agencies and media organizations.

CHICAGO

Advertising and public relations assistant professor of practice Sheri Sallee, led 14 CoJMC students as they visited Chicago to learn more about the communications opportunities the city offers.

“Chicago is such a great city to launch a marketing and communications career,” Sallee said. “This trip allowed students to see what possibilities there are and what might be a good fit for them.”

The students visited a large variety of agencies, including Edelman, Leo Burnett, Frequency540, Laughlin Constable and Cutters Studio. CoJMC alumni who participated in the tour stops included Lance Koenig, executive vice president and strategy director at Leo Burnett, and Chelsey Wahlstrom, senior account executive at Laughlin Constable.

Students also had the unique experience of visiting the brand management department of Goose Island and meeting with CoJMC alumnus and Brand Manager Andy Osterman.

In addition to these visits, the students also attended: the Chicago International Film Festival, CoJMC alumna and New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell’s “Carry On” book signing and Chicago Ideas Week’s “Makers in America” panel.

NEW YORK

This is the 10th year the CoJMC has organized this trip in conjunction with the Advertising Women of New York conference. Nearly 30 students traveled to NYC to visit agencies and media organizations and network with CoJMC alumni in the city.

“It was a wonderful experience for our students,” said Sue Roush, CoJMC director of marketing and communications and adjunct instructor. “The students saw ad agencies, non-profits and media companies. It was a great time to network and hone in on career choices.”

The students visited a variety of agencies, including Edelman, charity:water, LaForce + Stevens, Deutsch, Inc., Weber Shandwick, DigitasLBi, Cake J. Walter Thompson and Publicis.

They also had the opportunity to visit several top media organizations, including Time Magazine, Fast Company, CNN, Fox News and The Daily Show.

The college also sponsored an Alumni Mixer at Hudson Station for students and alumni to network.

Senior advertising and public relations major Brandi Snyder attended both trips and recommends students try to go on one of the CoJMC-sponsored trips.

“Students should jump at the opportunity to do trips like this because it really opens your eyes to what’s out there after graduation,” senior advertising and public relations major Brandi Snyder said. “You get to see what it’s like in the real world and connect with the people you could be working with one day.”
