Graphic Designer/Compositor, University Press

Working under the direct supervision of the Project Supervisor within the Journals Division support all functions related to the production of the press’s journals and other publications, such as conceptualizing, designing, and typesetting.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Associate’s degree and one (1) year professional experience in design and layout of book-length publication materials; equivalent education and experience will be considered. Additional training and/or professional experience in Abode Create Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop. Applicants must present a strong portfolio of work to show ability to apply excellent design skills. Work history will demonstrate knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite (In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator), Basic HTML/CSS, Microsoft Office, Knowledge of electronic publishing (such as Epub, mobi, etc.); Skills: Strong and versatile portfolio demonstrating knowledge of typography, design, good technical knowledge of typesetting, and black-and-white and color printing, Excellent InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator skills, Proofreading, Excellent oral, communication, and time management skills; Abilities: Create aesthetically-pleasing cover designs and layouts for journals and other publishing projects using Adobe InDesign, Proven project management ability, i.e., manage multiple and overlapping projects, monitor and meet schedules for multiple issues simultaneously, work cooperatively as well as collaboratively and flexibly with internal staff and external partners, such as editors and print vendor, work independently, Excellent problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills, Attention to detail and quality in work and efficient.

Preferred Qualifications
Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in a related field or BFA, such as Graphic Design or Book Design. One (1) or more years from a publishing environment. Good technical knowledge of book design, typesetting, prepress, and black-and-white and color printing. Experience with working with XML-coded files. A knowledge or background of print production.
