Teaching Mentors, Omaha Public Schools

Making Invisible Histories Visible (MIHV) is an innovative summer program conducted by the Omaha Public Schools that uses Omaha’s rich (and often hidden) history to help in-coming high school students. This year, in partnership with TeachRock.org, we will focus on the musical heritage of Omaha’s African American community. You will help students play an active role collecting and analyzing primary source materials, conducting and editing oral histories with local people, interacting with university professors, and designing and creating a documentary for the MIHV website. (Visit http://invisiblehistory.ops.org). The program provides a unique opportunity for these young people to better understand the power and importance of local history and share their work with other OPS students, teachers, the larger Omaha community, and the world! We are looking for energetic and positive applicants who are eager to share their enthusiasm for history and who enjoy working with young people. Strong writing and research skills are a must. Experience creating a documentary would be helpful.

A Testimonial:
“Working with the MIHV program was an extremely rewarding experience. Not only did I get the opportunity to work with some exceptional students and teachers in OPS, but I also learned a great deal. The elders in our community are an invaluable resource. I was reminded of how important it is to remember the contributions of those that came before us.” – Karla B.
