BuzzFeed News is looking for a reporter to cover cyber security and its growing role in national security. The position reports to the national security editor and will be responsible for delivering agenda-setting exclusives and powerful, original reporting as well as responding to news developments.
The successful candidate will have significant experience covering a similar beat at another publication, demonstrate a track record of exclusive reporting, be able to write jargon-free yet sophisticated copy for an international audience, and respond to developments quickly with accuracy under deadline pressure. Familiarity with US surveillance law and the issues surrounding it is a must as is the ability to cultivate sources in both government and the wider cyber security world without sacrificing the ability to assess information skeptically. Passion for the role of cyber in international affairs and comfort reporting on cyber developments outside the United States are valuable qualifications as is an ability to read in a language other than English.
Applicants should be comfortable working independently in a collaborative environment, paying meticulous attention to detail, and seizing the initiative. Preference will be given to applicants willing to relocate to Washington, D.C., though the job may be based elsewhere for the right candidate. Regular travel to Washington will be expected.
