The "About Us" page is usually one of the top pages a user visits after landing on the "Home" page. On county sites, a link to your "About Us" page should display in the right column, in the grey box, under the "LOCAL RESOURCES" header.

When someone visits your "About Us" page they should be able to answer the following questions.

  • Who are you?
  • What do you do?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • Where are you located?
  • What are your hours?
  • How does someone contact you?

Who you are can be answered by telling your story— your history and mission. You can also include a video and a staff listing with staff photos and contact information. What you do can be answered by showing your impacts and linking to your impact report. You can also list a few of your programs/workshops and include testimonials from past participants. When you describe your services and who would benefit from them (youth, farmers, ranchers, entrepreneurs, etc.), you're letting users know who is your target audience.

How much content is too much to put on the "About Us" page?
How long a webpage should be is a debated question. Some website best practices say users don't like scrolling to view more content, while others say they don't like clicking.

In general, if the text on a webpage would fill up more than a page or two in a word doc, consider breaking the page up into multiple pages by topic. For example, if your county's "About Us" page has several paragraphs of text and photos about the history, you can create a separate history page and link to it from the about us page. The same goes for a staff listing. If you have several rows of staff members to list, consider creating a separate staff page and linking to it from the about us page. The staff and history pages can then be listed under the "LOCAL RESOURCES" header on your "Home" page.

How much content is too much can also depend on your target audience and the type of content. It's best to ask, "Is the content engaging, informative and organized? Does it relate to the page title/topic? And, does it provide the user with the information they need to accomplish their goal?"
