Community Piano Experience Offers Adult Group Courses Spring of 2015

How many of you have wished you had taken piano lessons as a child or had stuck with the lessons your parents made you take? To all of you adults who have always wanted to learn how to play the piano, now is the time to begin. Lincoln resident Jane Schneider participated in a group piano class on the UNL campus and encourages other adults to enroll in the classes, “I would recommend the course to anyone that is interested.”
The Community Piano Experience (CPE) was started in 2002 by Dr. Brenda Wristen, who is an Associate Professor of Music at UNL where she directs the piano pedagogy and keyboard skills programs. CPE offers Beginning and Intermediate piano classes to adults in the community as a way of providing recreational piano lessons to adults in a relaxed atmosphere. “This is a really wonderful opportunity,” says Dr. Wristen. “It will be fun, and the students will learn more about music while improving their piano skills.” No prior piano experience is needed for the Beginner Class while those with a basic knowledge of keyboard skills and note reading can join the Intermediate Class. Schneider comments, “No one needs to feel nervous about not being good enough – all those fears went away my first day. The teacher is excellent and she doesn’t make you feel bad about not “getting it” like many of us felt when taking lessons as children.”
The instructors offer solid music instruction while creating a learning environment that is low-key and enjoyable. “The music is fun to learn and brushing up on skills enhances the enjoyment of playing. Practicing is actually fun!” shares Schneider. The courses run for 11 weeks in both the fall and spring semesters; classes for this spring will begin on January 26 and 27. Classes meet weekly for a one and a half hour lesson on the UNL campus. The total cost for the class per semester is $175, which includes 11 weeks of classes and the textbook.
