Expand your horizons through NMSSI summer courses

NMSSI 2011: GEOS 898 Exploring Geology of our Solar System
NMSSI 2011: GEOS 898 Exploring Geology of our Solar System

What will you learn in Summer 2014 that will enhance your ability as a science teacher?

Summer has always been a time when highly motivated teachers continue their graduate education so that they return to their school in the fall eager to transfer knowledge gained into their own teaching. What's new in recent years is the development of mathematics, science and pedagogy courses that are delivered in a teacher-friendly format. This is the mission of the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes.

The complete course catalog for the 2014 Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) is now available on our NMSSI website and in UNL's MyRED registration system.

Two science courses that we are offering in Summer 2014 are:

GEOS 898: Methods in Geoscience Field Instruction (Class #3420, Sec # 591)
June 8-22 (June 9 depart at 8 a.m., June 22 return by 5 p.m.)

A 15-day, inquiry-based geology field course in which participants will enhance their inquiry skills and experience learning (and camping) in the great outdoors across Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. The primary aim of this course is to improve educators’ ability to teach inquiry, gain knowledge and understanding of geoscience, and to demonstrate effective teaching methods for 6-12 learning environments. Participants will discover, observe and study a variety of natural phenomena, focusing on Earth processes and geological history. Enrollment is limited to 10. Instructor: David Harwood, Dept. of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

GEOS 898: Exploring the Geology of our Solar System (Class # 3421, Sec # 692)
July 21-25 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

The goal of this course is to offer a broad overview of planetary science to improve educators’ knowledge and understanding of the processes which shape the surfaces of the terrestrial bodies in our solar system. This course is designed to take you beyond the typical classroom lecture and book approach to highlight educational tools and inquiry based teaching methods that can be integrated into the K-12 learning environment. Instructor: Mindi Searls, Dept. of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

**Registration**
Summer registration opens today (Monday, March 17). If you have taken NMSSI courses before, go to MyRED to complete the registration process. If you first need to apply to UNL's Graduate Studies, contact Teach Nebraska.

**Fellowships**
For all on-site NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition fellowship from UNL equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. Additionally, Nebraska K-12 teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI Fellowships to further defray tuition costs for NMSSI courses. See our NMSSI website for details.
