The three-day Big Red Welcome Weekend will official kickoff at 5:30 p.m. Friday, August 20 with the New Student Convocation and Picnic at Ed Weir Track. All new incoming students are invited to attend the outdoor ceremony which will include talks by Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Athletic Director Tom Osborn.
Activities will continue into the night. An 8:45 p.m. pep rally in the Coliseum will feature Husker football and volleyball players, the spirit squad, Scarlet Dancers, Lil’ Red, Herbie Husker, and the UNL Jazz Band. Attendees will have the chance to play contests to win great prizes.
The pep rally will transistion into the annual Party @ the Rec celebration where students get visit with local vendors to win even more prizes and gifts. Free food will be served by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, Papa John’s Pizza, and Pepsi; the University Bookstore will be giving free t-shirts and 106.3 will provide the music entertainment.
The night concludes with free movies at the downtown Grand Theatre starting at 10:30 p.m.
