Summer Transfer Credit - What You Need to Know

As students meet with their academic advisers and create their education plans, those plans sometimes include taking a course at another institution away from UNL, often over the summer. A quick check of the Transfer Equivalency List (http://admissions.unl.edu/nebraska/equivalency.aspx) will tell the student if the course has already been evaluated. If the desired course has not been evaluated, the student should first discuss it with his/her academic adviser before enrolling.

Once the student and adviser have agreed on a potential transfer course, it is wise to have the course evaluated and an equivalent established before the student registers for the course. That way the student will know how the course will transfer. If possible contact the institution offering the course and request a syllabus. A course description may not have enough information.

To request that a transfer course be evaluated, gather the course information—institution, course number and title, description, and if possible, a syllabus. Forward the information to the Academic Transfer Coordinator (joann.moseman@unl.edu). Allow two weeks for the course to be reviewed by a faculty evaluator in the department before registering for the course.

Students who plan take a course or a semester at another NU campus (UNK, UNO or UNMC) should complete the Intercampus Application on-line (http://admissions.unl.edu/nebraska/equivalency.aspx). No application fee is required.

Once transfer courses are completed and the grades posted, contact the registrar at that college to have an official transcript sent to the Office of Admissions, 1410 Q Street, Lincoln NE 68588-0417. Students should follow up with their academic advisers to make sure the courses apply to their degrees as expected.
