For many students, college is a time of growth and independence. In some cases, this new and exciting time can reveal emotional challenges, either instantly or slowly over the course of their academic careers.

As parents, you can take action to support and encourage your student by talking to them about their mental health. If you suspect your student is showing signs of stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns, consider referring them to University Health Center’s Counseling and Psychological Services.

CAPS’ diverse staff of psychologists and counselors offer individual, group or relationship counseling sessions on the following topics:
• Anxiety and depression
• Communication skills
• Diversity/cultural concerns
• Drug and alcohol issues
• Eating disorders
• Grief and trauma
• Homesickness
• Learning disabilities/ADHD
• Relationship difficulties
• Sexuality concerns
• Social justice issues
• Test anxiety
• Other personal concerns

CAPS also offers workshops and support groups to help students reduce stress, gain confidence and address the following issues:
• Alcohol/drug harm reduction
• Body image
• Completing theses and dissertations
• Eating concerns
• Gender and sexual identity
• Managing anger
• And more
