Interested in research opportunities and a summertime travel experience? You should consider a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) opportunity sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Universities all over the country run summer research programs for small groups of undergraduates from other institutions; the students receive stipends and often some sort of assistance in travel and housing. Not only do you get more experience with research, you also get to learn more about another institution or area of research where you might want to work in the future. Application deadlines vary by program, but most deadlines occur before February 1. Therefore, this is a good time to start thinking about programs that might be a good fit for you.
