Spring 2013 Biotechnology / Life Sciences Seminar Series

“Environmental Risk Assessments for Genetically Engineered Crops with Combined Insect-Resistance Traits,” will be presented by Dr. Steven Levine, Monsanto Company. One part of the requirements to obtain cultivation approval for a arthropod-active genetically engineered plant event, is to perform a battery of ecological fate and effects tests in order to assess the potential for adverse effects to non-target organisms. This process includes understanding mode of action, spectrum of activity, routes of exposure and exposure levels, selection of test species, ecological safety testing and then assessing potential ecological risks. This seminar will provide an overview of the process and examples of ecological risk assessments for multiple trait arthropod-active genetically engineered events.
The seminar begins at 4:00 p.m., preceded by a reception at 3:30 p.m. The seminar is free and open to the public. The Beadle Center is located at 1901 Vine Street. The complete schedule of seminars may be found at http://biotech.unl.edu/
