The publicity surrounding Martin's death and the ensuing trial catapulted the country into national debate. Subsequently, the deaths of Mike Brown and other black males in the past year have refueled discussion on the continued impact of racial profiling, gun violence and civil advocacy.

Despite the intense struggle of losing a child, Fulton has become a role model by turning her grief into advocacy. Fulton’s speech will address the crucial need to look to inspiring role models to determine how best to exercise the right for peaceful protest and to address social injustices.

A Miami native, Fulton earned a bachelor's degree in English from Florida Memorial University. She worked for the Miami-Dade County Housing Development Agency for more than 25 years and is a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Miami Gardens.

OASIS promotes and advocates an inclusive learning environment at UNL and is dedicated to be a resource for the success of students.
