Technology has forever changed the landscape of higher education, and continues to do so often at a rapid pace. A university-wide symposium on the use of technology to teach and work will offer sessions on social media in the classroom, massive open online courses (MOOCs), best practices in instructional design and information technology, the future of Office 365, information security and analytics.
The Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium will be held May 10 at the Nebraska Union on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Attendance is open to the entire University of Nebraska community and guests and is free of charge. Lunch will be provided.

The event is an expansion of the annual NU Technology Day and is presented by University of Nebraska Information Technology (UNIT) and University of Nebraska Online Worldwide, the university’s distance education initiative.
“This day provides a wonderful opportunity to come together as a university, share cross-campus and cross-discipline effective practices and hear the perspectives and predictions of several remarkable and widely recognized leaders in online education,” said Mary Niemiec, associate vice president distance education and director of University of Nebraska Online Worldwide.
NU faculty and staff will have the opportunity to engage with nationally recognized experts in the use of technology to teach, share their experiences, and learn from the initiatives of colleagues from across the university. The event provides opportunities for networking and includes a vendor showcase.
The morning keynote will be delivered by Ray Schroeder, associate vice chancellor for online learning and founding director of the Center for Online Learning, Research and Service at the University of Illinois Springfield. Schroeder is also the publisher of the popular Online Learning Update and Educational Technology blogs.
The event’s closing session will be given by Daphne Koller, Stanford University professor and co-Founder and co-CEO of Coursera, a social entrepreneurship company that works with top universities to make education accessible across the globe – for free. Koller will address the symposium via two-way interactive video, with opportunity for audience interaction.
In addition, Tanya Joosten, interim director of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Learning Technology Center and author of Social Media for Educators will deliver two sessions focused on the use of social media in an online or blended course.
