Benjamin Hintz, a University of Nebraska–Lincoln Department of Agronomy and Horticulture student, received a six-month Disney Agricultural Internship in Orlando, Florida. Hintz graduated in May with a Bachelor of Science in agronomy with minors in horticulture, Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program and math. He was a member of the Agronomy Club.
Professional internships are offered with the Agricultural Sciences team as part of Disney’s Animals, Science & Environment. Qualified college students are provided an opportunity for hands-on work experience in the unique growing areas that are part of Living with The Land, an agricultural attraction at Epcot®.
Selected from 50 applicants, Hintz will be working in the greenhouses at The Land tending plants and leading informative and interactive guest tours through the facilities. He will also help manage the garden at Golden Oak, a high-end gated Disney community, to supply the clubhouse restaurant with fresh produce and garnishes for their high-end cuisine.
“I believe my real-world experience in leadership, speaking and travel while here at Nebraska was the reason I was chosen for this internship,” Hintz said.
Hintz grew up in Hebron, Nebraska, on a diversified family farm operation where his family grows row crops, manages a produce business and tends a cow and calf herd.
According to Hintz, the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program allowed him to learn about running a business, building a team, turning ideas into reality and overcoming obstacles along the way. “I've learned a lot about myself through classroom and real-world experience,” he said.
His future plans are to return to the family farm and expand their fresh produce business. “This passion is what spiked my interest in the Disney World Horticulture Internship,” Hintz said.
