Scholar in the Spotlight: Dina Morales

My name is Dina Morales and I am involved with the McNair program and first learned about this opportunity through a flyer. I walked by it, read through it and thought it would be amazing if I could get accepted into it. You will experience things that will change your life once you become a McNair Scholar and will learn skills and tools that will come in handy in the most surprising of places. I've learned so much with the McNair program and so many doors open up when you receive the honor of becoming a McNair scholar.

One of the most important things that I have learned as a McNair scholar is that every single goal in life that I hope to achieve is simply up to me and no one else. There is nothing standing in the way of my goals and dreams except me. There will always be obstacles but it is my attitude that will determine whether I succeed or fail. One of the coolest parts about being a McNair scholar is going to the University of California-Berkeley to present research. It's an amazing experience, you meet so many people from different walks of life, learn about the research they're doing and at the end of the week you realize that all of your hard work has paid off. There's no better feeling.

One piece of advice I have for my fellow Thompson Scholars is that if you're thinking about applying, do so. Don't walk away from the application because you think you're not good enough. Let someone else decide that.
