Scholar in the Spotlight: Khu Htoo

Hometown:
My name is Khu Htoo and I was born in Burma. When I was 2 years old, my family had to moved to a Karen refugee camp called Nop Poe in Thailand because of the civil war. We lived in the refugee camp for more than 10 years and life was very difficult. On the bright side of the picture is that I am very thankful that my family got to go to United States, and unbelievably I had the opportunity to go to college with the help from The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation.

Major:
Right now, my major is Business Administration. The reason why I choose Business Administration is that I want to explore the different field of business. I strongly believe that with a business degree, I can serve people.

Year in school:
This is my first year in college and I love it. It is really different from high school because you are more independent and you learn how to take care of yourself. I believe that once you can take care of yourselves, you then can help people.

Favorite Food:
I have a lot of favorite food because I like to eat. When it comes to food, I love to try new things, so I love food from different cultures. When I try different cultural food, I learn that different cultural foods have a unique taste and they are really good. With this in mind I think that it very important that we keep our cultural food just as they are.

Random fact about yourself:
First, I am very curious. I am a learner, so everyday I learn something or discover something new whether in class or elsewhere. Second, I am a thinker. I think about the future and how I can make a better future. Lastly, determination is my guiding principle I will never give up on what I want to do.

Something you have learned as a William H. Thompson Scholar:
The first week of school, I had no idea where I was. I learned that most people were walking head down and they seemed to be concentrating on their own. I thought that I was in another world. Then I realized that what I’ve learned was right. If I don’t get connected, I will end up shy and afraid and my journey won’t be long. I am very thankful that William H.Thompson Scholars provide the learning community and I always feel welcome in the community. It helped me a lot during my first few weeks of college.

Something you love most about being a William H. Thompson Scholar:
What I love most about being a William H. Thompson Scholar is that I don’t really have to worry about paying for college while I am in school. I can focus on my school work because William H. Thompson Foundation pays everything for me.

Something you are looking forward to this year as a W.H. Thompson Scholar:
I want to see how I will do during my first year of college and I hope that this will be a learning and helpful experience for my second year in college. I also looking forward to get connected with as many organization in campus as I can and get to know my William H. Thompson Scholar staff and be involve in W.H. Thompson Scholar activities.

Where you see yourself in 10 years:
In 10 years I imagine myself being in the business world where I help people. In all my life, all I want to do is to serve people and make a difference.
