Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln presents "Art by Women" from the Wachovia A.G. Edwards Corporate collection. The exhibition opens March 6 with a First Friday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. and will be on view through April 26. The exhibition includes nearly 40 prints and photographs by women artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Sheldon's Print Study Gallery will display 15 photographs by artists whose work spans more than 80 years. Among the photographers whose works are included are Berenice Abbott, Irene Fay, Sylvia Plachy, Madoka Takogi and Jane Reece.

The prints featured in "Art by Women" also cover a broad spectrum, ranging from abstract expressionist pieces to more contemporary work. Some of the artists featured are Lee Krasner, Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Jennifer Bartlett, Pat Steir and Judy Pfaff. Many of these artists are considered to have been revolutionary because of their efforts to portray women equally in the art world. Admission to "Art by Women" and the Sheldon Museum of Art is free.

Major support for this exhibition comes from Wachovia Securities' Lincoln office. Drs. Gene Stohs, Debra Placek, Jeffrey Tomjack and Alecia Lovegrove at Gynecologic Surgeons and Obstetricians, the Nebraska Arts Council and Sheldon Art Association are supporting this exhibition.

In conjunction with "Art by Women," Sheldon will present two events:

Sheldon Sunday Talk, 2 p.m. March 8. Karen Kunc, a UNL art and art history professor, will lead a gallery discussion about the exhibition. This is a free talk and the public is invited.

Symposium, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. March 28. Sheldon presents "For Business and Pleasure: A Symposium on Corporate and Private Collecting." For more information and to register for the symposium, call Laurie Sipple at (402) 472-1170.
