The Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host an opening public reception 5-7 p.m. June 26 for "Play's the Thing: The Paintings and Objects of Jun Kaneko."
An Omaha resident, Kaneko is internationally recognized for his large ceramic "dangos" (Japanese for "dumpling"). The exhibition explores the relationship between his monumental ceramic sculptures and his paintings, his first and lesser-known medium. In addition to sculptures and new, large-scale paintings, the artist's drawings for opera costume designs and other works on paper will be on view.
"Play's the Thing" will also be one of the exhibitions used to inspire art-making activities during the Museum's Family Fun Event 5-7 p.m. July 10.
Sheldon Museum of Art houses a permanent collection of more than 12,000 objects focusing on American art. Sheldon, 12th and R Streets on the UNL City Campus, is open free to the public during regular hours. The museum's hours are: Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays.
