The Great Plains Art Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present an exhibition of black and white photography by John Evasco this fall. The environmental portrait series, "People of the Plains," will run Nov. 6 through Dec. 13 in the museum's west gallery.
Evasco, a resident of Lincoln for the past 40 years, is self-taught and has been working in traditional black and white photography for almost 10 years. His first few attempts garnered prizes at the Nebraska State Fair photography competition which encouraged him to enter photography competitions nationwide. The Great Plains Art Museum will host his first solo exhibition.
"People of the Plains" depicts residents of the Great Plains in their work or life environments. Evasco travels with his equipment and never stages his portraits, but photographs his subjects just as he first encounters them. Evasco discovered he could create something personal and unique with his style of portraiture. "I look for someone who has emotion in their body and face," he said. "If I can see that in them, I ask if I can take a picture and for some reason they say 'yes.'"
The exhibition will open with a First Friday reception 5-7 p.m. Nov. 6.
The Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q St., Hewit Place, is open to the public 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1:30-5 p.m. Sundays (closed Mondays, university holidays and between exhibitions). There is no admission charge. For more information, telephone (402) 472-6220, e-mail gpac2@unl.edu www.unl.edu/plains/gallery/gallery.shtml.
