UNL College of Journalism offers 'One Day University' workshops

To help harried professionals refresh workplace skills, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications is offering a series of educational seminars on communication challenges.

The "One Day University: Seminars for Busy People" will be taught each Friday in February, with morning workshops from 9 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., in Andersen Hall. Topics will include grammar, good writing principles, business writing, social media, blogging and public relations. Faculty will lead the sessions, lending expert advice and teaching the most current techniques in an interesting and understandable manner.

Cost is $75 for a half-day session, or $125 for both sessions in the same day. Registration information is available at http://journalism.unl.edu/projects/oneday.shtml.

Seminar dates and topics are:

Feb. 5 - Grammar and Writing Tool Kits (morning session with Charlyne Berens, afternoon session Michelle Carr Hassler). The workshops will cover

Feb. 12 - All Things Web (Sue Burzynski Bullard). Sessions will explain the basics of blogging and Web writing, how to effectively deliver news and information online, how to develop a low-cost Web presence and how to use blogs to communicate internally or with a larger audience.

Feb. 19 - Public Relations (Phyllis Larsen). Sessions will cover the fundamentals of public relations, including collaborating with reporters, media interviews, using social media and solving communication problems by applying PR techniques.

Feb. 26 - Writing for Business Today (Jana Miller Langemach). Sessions will explore how to write effective business messages; how to deliver bad news, craft goodwill messages and be persuasive.
