1st UNL Achievement Banquet Honors Omaha Students

Lincoln, Neb., Dec. 12, 2003 -- The University of Nebraska-Lincoln recognized the achievements of more than 100 Omaha-area high school students Dec. 7 at the inaugural Nebraska Achievement Banquet at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Omaha.

This dinner event was a celebration of diverse talents, highlighting the accomplishments that students of color have made in the Omaha metro area through academics, leadership or community service. UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman was the keynote speaker and Danielle Davis, a UNL senior from Omaha who will graduate Dec. 20, spoke as a featured current student.

Each Honored Scholar was presented with a certificate and memento of special recognition.

"At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, we value the contributions these honored scholars are making to their community, their family and to their future. We are excited to spend an evening with such an accomplished group of potential UNL students," said Amber Hunter, assistant director of admissions at UNL and the banquet's coordinator.

The Nebraska Achievement Banquet is one of several events coordinated by UNL this year as part of recruitment and retention efforts of in-state and out-of-state students. Diversity of UNL students increased in 2003, and admissions officials hope the Nebraska Achievement Banquet will play a role in efforts to continue to increase the diversity of students on campus.
