Visual Art Commission Project; Tech Refactored

The Nebraska Governance and Technology Center at the University of Nebraska is in interdisciplinary center focused on the relationship between society and technology. The center approaches many of their projects through the filter of law and regulation, but view tech challenges as broad, field spanning issues. The center's podcast, "Tech Refactored" (https://ngtc.unl.edu/tech-refactored), explores the intersection of technology, law, and society.

The center is seeking to commission 4 pieces of art that serve several major purposes:

1. Prints of the original pieces will be printed at a high quality, backed on cardboard, bagged, and sent to our podcast guests as a thank-you gift for their participation. These prints may (and should) include an artist bio.

2. The center is also expanding its video content and is creating numerous educational videos including interviews and short lectures with our faculty. Art pieces will also be used to add décor to our recording room.

3. The center wants to highlight students from the University of Nebraska and find ways to create and explore a relationship to our work and the fine arts. This project is hopefully just the beginning of future creative collaborations.

Theme:
Pieces should reflect the theme of “how society and technology interact” and artists are encouraged to take that on in a very broad way, viewing the technology in our day to day to lives, such as infrastructure, agricultural technology, to more traditional notions of tech such as computers and networks, etc. Artists are encouraged to find inspiration in our past episodes.

Commission Details:

• Artists will receive $500 at the completion of the project. Students will receive this award to their student account (if there is no account balance the award will be processed as a refund to the student).
• The center would like projects to be complete and photographed for print by September 1 (note, this date is extended from what is in the attached flyer). Applications will be considered on a first come basis until four pieces are selected.
• Artists will coordinate with the center to have their piece photographed or otherwise made into a reproduceable print and draft a short artist bio to be included on the back of the print. The center will cover these expenses.
• There is no preferred media; paintings, to graphic design, to sculpture is all welcome.
• Artists should be students (at any level) at the University of Nebraska (interested faculty is also encouraged to reach out to Elsbeth Magilton).

Apply:
Interested artists should send Elsbeth Magilton (elsbeth@unl.edu) an email with a paragraph on their medium, general idea, and why they’d be interested in this project. A link to a portfolio is also welcomed.
