COE Updates from the Dean

Newsletter Introduction

This is a tremendous time in the life of the college and it's vital that we communicate effectively and regularly. We've created this internal bimonthly "newsletter" to provide updates, as well as to celebrate your achievements. Enjoy!

LB 956 - Moving Forward

Here's a quick update from the Chancellor's Office: LB 956 was passed by the state legislature last week, which includes the deferred maintenance funding for engineering and education/human sciences. It has already been presented to the Governor's office for his signature.

Jeff Korengel Presentation

Thanks to all who attended the seminar by Jeff Korengel on the state of food and food manufacturing in the U.S.

Jeff is working closely with us to put together a pre-proposal for the Dept. of Commerce call for Manufacturing Innovation Institute proposals. Other people helping from here in the university include Rolando Flores (Food Science), Ronnie Green, David Jones, Mark Riley and Curt Weller. We have reached out to the Nebraska community college system and the Department of Economic Development. Our colleagues in California (UC-Davis) and Georgia (Georgia Tech) are doing the same.

Regardless of the success of this particular submission, the hope is that we will continue to build a major public-private partnership that will give us a broader context for future research proposals (from anti-microbial materials and coatings, to bio and automation sensors, controls, robotics, data analytics, thermal processes, multiphase flows, etc.).

His powerpoint presentation can be found at the link below.

Input from Employee and Student Meetings

In the past month, we have held an all-employee meeting and a "Wei in with the Dean" for Omaha students. At both gatherings, I asked two similar questions: "What do we want to be known for in the future?" and "What does a great college of engineering look like?"

We've compiled the responses from these meetings and I wanted to share them with all of you, as they are quite thoughtful and follow specific themes that are important to the college as a whole.

For now, we've only included responses from a select few questions. More may be added later, as well as any comments after my meeting with students in Lincoln yesterday.
