“Scientific & Regulatory Challenges of Per- & Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS): A New England Perspective”

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of synthetic and persistent organic contaminants used in a number of commercial and industrial applications. Their widespread use has led to the contamination of drinking water, surface water and soils around the globe. Certain PFAS have also been shown to be highly bioaccumulate, resulting in measurable levels within wildlife and humans. Such exposures are concerning as certain PFAS have been associated with changes in lipid metabolism, immune function, hormone activity and other biological markers of disease. States experiencing significant environmental releases of PFAS have enacted regulatory standards on these contaminants, but this presents unique challenges for civil engineers, public health experts and environmental regulators. This presentation will 1) provide an overview of the process for stablishing drinking water regulations in New Hampshire and 2) highlight the scientific issues surrounding health risk assessment, regulation and remediation of PFAS. This discussion will underscore the future need for professionals interested in cross-disciplinary and collaborative work in order to address chemical contamination of our natural resources.
