Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Graduate Seminar

Spencer Perry, MS Student will present "Monitoring Wastewater Effluents for SARS-CoV-2 Outbreaks in Campus Dormitories"

The Covid-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has proven difficult to control and monitor due to inherent bias and delay in clinical testing results. Research shows the virus is shed through fecal matter and can be detected and quantified in the wastewater of a catchment population. The principles of wastewater surveillance are being applied at the University of Nebraska Lincoln to monitor viral loads in campus dormitories. Viral concentration time courses have been developed for the fall 2020 semester. With the addition of the saliva testing program in the spring semester, results from wastewater grab samples can be compared with those of the saliva testing program at UNL.

Maximilien Kiemde will present "Community-based wastewater monitoring for SARS-CoV-2"

The use of wastewater as a complementary approach to the surveillance of infectious disease is an increasing necessity as a response to the COVID 19 global pandemic. The goal of this study is to monitor the community wastewater of three Nebraska cities for SARS-CoV-2. The preliminary results indicate the absence of the virus in WWTP effluent and the presence of the virus in the influent wastewater solids. Results are being correlated to COVID incidence in each community.

Andrew Pham Thesis Defense on April 15

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Announces the Master’s in Environmental Engineering Thesis Defense of Andrew Pham

“Reducing Resource and Environmental Impacts in Water Resource Recovery Facilities: Design Practices for Small Communities”

Advisor: Bruce Dvorak

“Although water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) reduce environmental impacts related to water quality, their construction and operation result in negative environmental impacts in other categories. The Life Cycle Assessment methodology was used to evaluate and compare the inventory and environmental impacts of nine small WRRFs, most of which are serving slow growing or declining populations. From the analysis, three opportunities for impact mitigation were identified. The first suggested practice is to avoid significant overdesign by planning for no lower than a 75% capacity utilization. Other suggested practices were focused on the conveyance process element, namely, to minimize non-process facility area and to use polyvinyl chloride pipe instead of ductile iron pipe where possible.”

New Technology Courses Available to Graduate Students Through the College of Law

Beginning in the fall semester of 2021, the Nebraska Governance and Technology Center is excited to launch its new Technology Governance curriculum. These shorter-term 1-2 credit hour classes are ideal for policy interested students, in the technology and internet area, from a variety of disciplines.

This curriculum is designed to be integrated and modular, meaning that students are free to take any selection of classes on a stand-alone basis but that the classes are designed to consciously complement each other. The cornerstone of the curriculum is the three-week Concepts class, which is a prerequisite to all other Technology Governance classes.

All of these classes are taught at the College of Law, but classes are open to all graduate students.

A link to more information on the program can be found here: https://ngtc.unl.edu/news/new-technology-governance-curriculum-announced.

Should you have any questions on the new curriculum, you can email the Nebraska Governance and Technology Center’s Executive Director, Elsbeth Magilton, at elsbeth@unl.edu.
