Barton said running as an independent “is an interesting strategic move to try to capture support from partisans of both stripes, but it carries the electoral risk of not running under the Republican label in a red state.”

Ziskey won first place in the national writing championship and received a $10,000 scholarship, while Lewis placed third and earned a $5,000 scholarship. Stories on the two have appeared in the Fremont Tribune, KETV and Lincoln Journal Star.
