Camille Hawbaker, visiting lecturer in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design, will teach a workshop September 3 and 4 on shibori, a dyeing technique that originated in Japan. The technique is used in the pieces currently on display in the Robert Hillestad Gallery as part of the Jan Myers-Newbury: A Touch of Kismet collection. Workshop participants will be introduced to the range of shibori methods and will dye several of their own pieces, which can then be used in larger projects.

Shibori was first introduced in the United States by artist and scholar Yoshiko Wada. Today, it’s a very popular dyeing technique—just search “shibori” on Pinterest and take a look at the many different methods and possibilities. During the workshop, participants will dye cotton and silk fabrics using a pole-wrap method of shibori. Hawbaker says she is excited for participants to not only get a glimpse of the shibori technique, but also to gain a better understanding of the dyeing process in general. That knowledge will help enable participants to incorporate custom-dyed fabrics into their own unique designs.

Registration for the two-day workshop is $75 and will includes materials and lunch each day. The workshop will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. both days and will meet in rooms 21 and 22 in the Home Economics Building on East Campus. To register, please call 402-472-2911.
