TEAMS teacher leaders in math meet to discuss course plans.

This summer, the NDE and UNL have partnered to offer professional development workshops for K-12 teachers in five cities across the state through Nebraska Partnership TEAMS. You can choose to take the workshop for 3 hours of graduate credit at UNL if you want, but it’s not a requirement. Teachers are also paid a stipend of $15 per hour of class, which you could choose to apply toward the tuition and fees. Applications will be accepted through Feb. 7.

Here are the secondary mathematics workshop details:

TITLE: Math 896: Special Topics: Functional Reasoning in STEM for Secondary Mathematics Teachers
DESCRIPTION: This course will focus on content knowledge for secondary mathematics teachers, connecting functions across the secondary mathematics curriculum to each other and to science content. Functions arise when modeling physical phenomena, providing connections across the curriculum and to the world outside school. Through the content of functions, teachers in this course will solve mathematical problems, model and represent mathematical problems, communicate mathematical ideas effectively, and make mathematical connections.
DATES: June 5-9 and 12-16, 2017 (both weeks are required), and four Saturdays during the school year (TBD by your group)
TIMES: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (80 total hours of class)
CREDIT HOURS: 3
STIPEND: $15 per hour of class attended
SITES: Crete, Fremont, Grand Island, Norfolk, North Platte (and potential sixth site in Scottsbluff)
INSTRUCTORS: TEAMS teacher leaders (already selected)
NOTES: Field trips will be part of the course.

Here are the elementary workshop details:

TITLE: Math 896: Special Topics: Integrating elementary science and mathematics to enhance learning
DESCRIPTION: Teachers will learn to leverage science explorations to provide context and meaning to mathematics instruction in the elementary classroom, while also supporting children’s learning of science. Participants will engage in integrated science/math experiences, deepen their knowledge of concepts needed to integrate math and science in their own classrooms, and learn how to develop rich, integrated lessons to engage children in meaningful and memorable learning experiences.
DATES: June 5-9 and 12-16, 2017 (both weeks are required), and four Saturdays during the school year (TBD by each group)

These are brand-new courses being developed by the UNL faculty and TEAMS teacher leaders and replaces NMPDS. There is only space for about 12 people in each workshop at each site, so we ask that you apply soon before all the spots are filled! We prefer to select up to two 7-12 math teachers from each district for this workshop. A course for secondary science teachers will also be running concurrently at the same sites.

The application deadline has been extended through Tuesday, Feb. 7. All you need to do to apply is to write a less-than-1-page essay describing why you want to attend the workshop and how you will benefit, and then ask your administrator to sign you up online: https://cse.unl.edu/scimath/apps/. One of your administrators needs to sign you up since he/she must agree to support your coursework during the academic year and attend one half-day of the workshop this summer, most likely the morning of June 15.
