LINCOLN, Neb.— Violist Clark Potter, violinist David C. Neely, mezzo-soprano Kate Butler and pianist Ann Chang present the luscious music of the English composer and violist Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) at 3 p.m. on September 8 at Kimball Recital Hall. The UNL School of Music event is free and open to the public.

Rebecca Clarke is a very provocative figure in music, being one of the first female professional orchestra players when she joined the Queen's Hall Orchestra in 1912 and one of the first female composition students of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford at the Royal College of Music. To be performed: Clarke's prize-winning (literally, in 1919) Viola Sonata, by far her most famous piece; Dumka, (Duo Concertante for Violin and Viola, with Piano), and two song cycles: Irish Country Songs for voice and violin (arranged for viola by Potter) and Three Old English Songs for voice and violin.

"Clarke's music is so beautiful, and almost no one outside of the viola world has ever heard of her,” Potter said. “She wrote quite a bit of viola music, and this recital gives us the opportunity to showcase some of the music which does not use the viola as well. The audience will leave wondering why they've never heard of her before!"
