UNL is joining forces with Big Ten universities to help boost the Red Cross' blood supply during the winter months.

Faculty, staff, students and alumni from UNL can participate in the "Border Challenge" blood drive, Jan. 30 to Feb. 3. The blood drive is hosted by the UNL Campus Red Cross Club.

"The Border Challenge is a chance for students, faculty, staff and alumni to show their school spirit while supporting a great cause," said Tricia Quinn, CEO of the local Red Cross Blood Services Region.

The Border Challenge is a partnership between six schools in the Big Ten Conference and the American Red Cross Blood Services. Each of the six schools is working with its local Red Cross to set up blood drives from Jan. 1 through Feb. 29. The goal is to help boost blood supplies during challenging winter months when inclement weather and cold and flu season traditionally impact donors’ availability to give.

Dates and times of the UNL blood drives supporting the Border Challenge are:

Jan. 30, noon to 7 p.m., Nebraska Union, Centennial Room

Jan. 31, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Nebraska Union, Centennial Room

Feb. 1, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Nebraska Union, Centennial Room

Feb. 2, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Nebraska Union Centennial Room

Feb. 3, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nebraska Union Plaza (look for the Red Cross bus)

For more information or to make an appointment, call 800-733-2767 or go to http://redcrossblood.org. All blood types are needed. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. People 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), who weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 and younger also have to meet height and weight requirements.
