Four new scripts written by students will be featured in the “New Artists Festival,” the final production of Theatrix’s 2012-2013 season.

The New Artists Festival offers students in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film the chance to write, direct, perform in, design and manage new scripts. The 2013 festival includes three 20-minute scripts and one full-length play.

Student directors for the festival are undergraduate theater and film majors Emma Gruhl, William Fischer, Dominic Ciafolo and Fred Drenkow.

The performances are divided into two shows on separate evenings.

“Songs From My Recorder No. 1” is the full-length play and will be performed at 7:30 p.m. April 4 and 6. The three shorter scripts, “And With Your Spirit,” “Everyone is an Asshole in Hell,” and “A Wizard’s Game,” will be featured at 7:30 p.m. April 5 and 2 p.m. April 7. All shows are in the Temple Building’s Lab Theatre.

Individual show tickets are $6 and available via credit card online at http://unltheatretickets.com or by cash/check at the door the evening of a performance.

“Songs From My Recorder No. 1,” written by Nate Ruleaux, chronicles an evening between college friends relaxing on a porch exploring questions about life, relationships and college while drinking a few cases of beer.

“And With Your Spirit,” written by Emily Martinez, focuses on five young adults who are at various crossroads in their lives. In the nominal safety of a Catholic church, each character reflects on how they got to where they are, and where they go from here.

“Everyone is an Asshole in Hell,” by Cory Soukup, follows challenges faced by a squabbling family that finds itself in the midst of Armageddon. The family struggles to put aside its differences and tackle the end of days together.

“A Wizard’s Game,” by Ben Adams, opens with an alcoholic medieval king who would rather party with wenches than responsibly rule a kingdom. Uwilling to see the lands further ravaged, the king’s two closest advisers seek the help of an eccentric wizard.

One design team will be in charge of intertwining the four very different plays. Undergraduate theatre major Cassie Tyrell designs scenery. Undergraduate theatre major Joe Shea is acting as the lighting and sound designer. Costumes are headed by Jessie Tidball, a recent theatre graduate. Props mistress and Theatrix newcomer Morgan Robertson handles all props.

Stage managers are Stephanie Kauhler and Emily Kuklinski. Might Rightmire is Theatrix’s technical director for the season.
